Construction of SEL Pipeline DeferredEssen/Kassel, 2 February 2004. The gas merchant companies Ruhrgas and WINGAS are postponing construction of the Süddeutsche Erdgasleitung (SEL) pipeline scheduled for 2005. During the regional impact assessment and the preparations for the plan approval procedure involving a total of 330 public bodies, it became clear that there are a large number of possible routes requiring further examination and evaluation. The companies will, however, pursue further the necessary administrative procedures for the pipeline project and shortly also start the plan approval procedure.Furthermore, the EU Gas Directive, which is to regulate gas transmission systems in future, has not yet been transposed into national law. Yet that is the prerequisite for being able to assess the long-term economic viability of new investments in gas transmission systems. The SEL project involves investments in the order of € 500 million.
