Haidach storage facility

The former Haidach natural gas reservoir – now used as a natural gas storage facility

On July 1, 2007 WINGAS, together with Rohöl-Aufsuchungs Aktiengesellschaft (RAG) and Gazprom Export, put Central Europe's second largest natural gas storage facility into operation at Haidach, Austria. In the final phase the Haidach facility will store up to 2.4 billion cubic metres of natural gas. This is around 30 per cent of Austria’s total annual natural gas consumption. As the owner of the concession, RAG is responsible for the construction and technical operation of the storage facility.

Haidach natural gas storage facility

Haidach natural gas storage facility is a joint venture of RAG, Gazprom Export and WINGAS. RAG is the technical operator.
The Haidach natural gas reservoir was discovered as a pore reservoir in 1997 at a depth of 1,600 metres. Its total volume of 4.3 billion cubic metres made the Haidach field Austria’s largest natural gas discovery since 1982. Since production started in 1998, the field has produced over 2.9 billion cubic metres of natural gas for the Austrian market. Building work for the storage facility commenced in September 2005.

In addition to using the field as a storage facility the Haidach natural gas storage project also involves linking the facility to the German-Austrian delivery point at Burghausen with the construction of an approximately 40 km long pipeline.
