Rehden storage facilityThe natural super tankThe WINGAS storage facility at Rehden in Northern Germany – the biggest storage facility in Western Europe – has a working gas volume of more than four billion cubic metres and occupies around eight square kilometres of space underground. It represents roughly a fifth of the entire storage capacity in Germany and thus makes a sustainable contribution towards supply security in the country. Wintershall has been producing gas from the natural gas reservoir since the 1950s. Then WINGAS converted the reservoir into a storage facility and put it into operation in 1993. At a depth of 2000 metres it can store the annual gas consumption of around two million households.
